Thank you for this. I want to read her book now. I am not shocked – I saw upper class families crying in my colony in Colaba, Bombay when they had another girl child- even though they also had a son (not that that’s relevant in any way, but still). However, I have been farther removed from this being south indian and being from Bombay. I know this will anger people but I’ve always believed there’s more gender equality in the south (among the upper educated class). Not because people are better, but because there are less ‘family’ businesses that need a male heir, so families realize that each individual has his or her worth.
Is there any evidence of where the worst cases lie geographically? Maybe my belief isn’t statistically significant.
It is certainly not a “genocide,” much less an organised genocide. Using such strong words rarely helps in thiking about the issue in a cool-headed and unhyterical manner. It also distacts from the gender issues which is what this is all about. Foeticide is not the same as murder and killing. Much less a “holocaust”… at least you didn’t use capital H and used quotes!
@Alok: I am extremely surprised that you cannot see that female foeticide can be classified as genocide. Murder of innocents on a mass scale is genocide, and a majority of the famale infantice/foeticide incidents are only due to their being female.
It is utterly shocking, and trying to be detached and cool-headed, makes light of an extremely serious (and dangerous) matter.
