Having said this, I must raise a thumb (in typical trigger-happy fashion) for Butter and Mashed Bananas, which I finally managed to catch. They had a clear premise and they managed to communicate it. Their funny lines were actually funny. There was movement and energy. And oh yes, a script that actually seemed to have some thought behind it. All good things.

I so agree with what you’ve written. Reviewing a play has become laughable at best. Where have all the serious theatre critics and more importantly, lovers, gone? The rookie writer, who’s just grateful for a beat and a freebie goes gratefully, watches half-heartedly and comes back and writes a student report with some impressive sounding words thrown in, like ‘plot’ and ‘lacuna’.
‘Butter and Mashed Bananas’. I missed that play but have heard good things about it from friends who have seen it.
I must be growing old – or possibly wise – I agree with both points of view. I agree honest criticism is good, and is needed, but honest isn’t necessarily rude. You can be forthright and forceful without being rude.
There’s a difference between walking out of a play and booing it. I’d reserve the booing for something offensive rather than just boring.
And if one wants to share one’s opinion with others, there are so many forums (sorry, I don’t like “fora”) these days – online as well as the more traditional print media.
Having said all that, I do agree that reviews in our English-language papers can be pathetic. (That’s not rude, it’s just honest.)
I have watched with disquieting horror the judging on kiddie talent shows. It leaves me in cold fear.
Brrr.
Also, I was watching Emily Levine speak about the genesis of her brand of philo-stand up comedy and what she says is impactful.
There is a form of improv referred to as theatre games where the only rule (she says the it’s a great rule for an ethical society) is to never deny the other person’s (performer’s) reality. Only build on it. And she continues with how it was in sharp contrast with living in a society where contradicting other people’s reality was/is considered the most apt method of survival. Lessons to be learnt, perhaps.
Sometimes good reviews are marred by an extreme amount of self importance and, occasionally, even by a tinge of misdirected intellectual angst (in literary circles). Though, the most severe form of critique is to be viewed in the food industry. Thats what my father said. (He might have biased what with being a chef, an artiste of food, etcetra.) And the most virulent too. Harsh criticism is the order of the day if you want to establish yourself as a good reviewer worthy of your Michelin certified salt!
Ok. Now I am hungry.
