Reminds me of Naomi Wolf's accusations against Harold Bloom some time ago. That episode seems to have hurt Wolf more than Bloom, with people asking, as with Walcott, why she is bringing up something that happened two decades previously. But in the Walcott case, according to reports, he admitted that the accuser's story was true at the time. I don't see how bringing it up now can be regarded as a smear. It is very relevant.

I can also believe the accusations against Bloom, and such behaviour is not confined to the humanities or literature departments. Shortly before I started postdocking at the Rockefeller University, its very eminent president had resigned after admitting inappropriate behaviour with a graduate student.
